Road repairs shambles

The delight of Gammons Lane finally being fixed with permanent repair today has been over-shadowed by the shambles of the closure of this key road in North Watford.

International women's day

On International Women's Day Sal Brinton, Watford's Parliamentary Candidate visited an exhibition of rugs made in workshops in Kabul by young women at Bushey and Oxhey Methodist Church. The workshops are supported by ASHRAM International, a charity based in Oxhey, which gives girls and young women the opportunity to learn a trade, and, importantly, how to support themselves throughout their lives.

Resurfacing disgrace - County loses grip

Whilst Sal Brinton and her team were out knocking on doors in Tudor at the weekend, they spotted a Herts Highways resurfacing sign, which claimed that the scheme to resurface Norfolk Avenue (a road of approximately 200m in length and 80 or so houses) would take an astonishing three weeks to resurface.

Nick Clegg met Watford

Sal commented on Nick's visit: 'This evening Nick Clegg, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, met residents in Watford at his "town hall" meeting, held at Beechen Grove Church . 200 people came to the event, and more than 24 asked him questions. He tackled subjects from should our troops being pulled out of Afghanistan to climate change, proportional representation, the economy, education, the health service, the Middle East, and Europe. It was a great evening, and plenty of people came up to me afterwards to say how impressed they were with him. Nick Clegg to visit Watford

Unemployment up in Watford

Sal Brinton commented on the news that unemployment figures in Watford had risen in January "This increase of 162 to at total of 1896 from December to January is worrying because it goes against the national trend, and moves Watford's unemployment level to 3.6%. This is the highest level of unemployment that Watford has faced since 1996. Whilst this is still below the national average, we must do everything we can to ensure that those out of work are getting access to the right advice and help to get them back into a job as soon as possible."

Vince Cable visits Mothercare Global HQ

On Thursday 11 February Vince Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer visited Mothercare plc at their Watford HQ. He and Sal Brinton, Liberal Democrat prospective MP for Watford, met Ben Gordon, Mothercare's Chief Executive and his team at their global HQ in Watford. Vince commented "I was impressed to meet a company that so clearly understands its market, and with ambitions to continue to expand internationally."

Vince Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, was the guest speaker at Watford and West Herts Chamber of Commerce on the evening of 11 February. He spoke to more than 120 guests turned up, including a group of sixth formers from Watford Grammar School for Girls.

Haiti earthquake - please help now

The long term effects of any natural disaster are very serious for any child, but for children with disabilities it can be even harder. One of the effects of the Haiti earthquake has been to destroy what little infrastructure there has been for the young patients at the Centre for Special Education (funded by Christian Blind Mission, the largest disability Non Government Organisation in the world). The lives of at least two staff at this centre have been lost, and the building is so badly damaged that it will probably be demolished.

Watford residents miss out on winter payments
